City In Siege

In the spring of 1950, the Red River swelled to catastrophic levels, threatening the city of Winnipeg and surrounding towns with massive flooding. As the waters rose, residents, civilian volunteers, and the armed services rallied together in a desperate, round-the-clock battle to build dikes, evacuate hospitals, and protect their homes. Backed by a massive national and international relief effort involving sandbag airlifts and heavy equipment, the resilient people of Winnipeg fought back against the overwhelming deluge. Despite extensive property damage and the evacuation of a third of the city's population, the community's steadfast endurance ultimately triumphed as the waters began to recede, marking the slow and determined beginning of reconstruction.
