Description: Train through rugged country, passing many native villages, takes us to "the big hole" that is the Kimberly diamond mines. Then to Pretoria, in the Transvaal, with many government buildings, wreathed in flowers. Johannesburg, the "Golden City," large ultra-modern buildings, double-decked street cars. Coolies push heavily-loaded cars of gold ore, smelting, 1000 fine ounces of pure gold, ore wastepiles mountain high. Native workers from remote kraals live largely in open here, and preserve their own village customs.
