Description: Charlie McCarthy, the ventriloquist, and Carl Peterson, the local telephone company supervisor, were old friends who always spent their vacations together. One year their vacation was delayed because several telephone employees had off-the-job accidents. Shortly after these accidents they began hearing stories from a number of telephone employees — strange voices "haunted" them whenever they were careless. The voices belonged to Charlie's friends: Mortimer Snerd, Effie Klinker, and Ophelia. The voices of Charlie and his friends also "haunted" other careless townspeople and thus prevented accidents.
