Under the Same Stars: Brazil

a wise man once said why should we not all live in peace and honey we look up at the same stars we are fellow passengers on the same planet and we dwell beneath the same sky what matters is along which Road each individual endeavors to find the ultimate truth behind me there sits a young man whom you don't know because you haven't met him yet you'll have a chance to meet him in just a moment he comes from another part of this same world that you and I live in he looks up however at the same stars and the same sky but who is he why is he here what does he do where does he come from well those are all things that I think he can tell you better than I can my name is Joe Lane in your country I was also married when this is my second visit to your country my first ended when I was drafted tonight I have to go home serve in the army my hometown and city of Sao Paulo large industrial city it's something like a mixture of New York and Detroit Pittsburgh might be like like New York it's a melting pot of all races nationalities in fact my only ancestors were Scots came to Missoula I don't fifty years ago it's a situated in the southern part of Brazil where the population is a little dancer quite a bit dancer and that's the Brazil and the the way of living is very much like here in this country the the racism cell follow the many Alden are not a question of law well they're not the question in people's minds are not much distinction of race is more of a economical classification for example a Negro in Brazil not considered a Negro unless he is except when he is no drop of white blood in him at all the population of Brazil is uh rather sparse as a whole the vast areas of the interior of Brazil are very sparsely populated there are even some areas there were totally unexplored the any white man has gone in certainly aftermath to tell about it in these areas is a great deal of room for more people the climate is pleasant throughout most of it the agricultural potential is great however the transportation so far is not there is a virtually no transportation except rivers and horseback occasional bad Road very little traffic not long ago I was set up to the frontier country to looking for some land by a group in Sao Paulo wanted to purchase in grazing land I rode for a month averaging about 35 miles a day to find this land eventually they bought it at after paying the taxes and other costs they paid about 50 cents an acre for it and that was actually quite expensive there's still a lot of free land left in Brazil where prison can squat and after a suitable development the government will let him have the land and you start paying the taxes now this this company wanted this land for cattle the cattle business is a pretty big business in Brazil as a Brazil has the fourth biggest herd in the world however we don't export very much there the home consumption is uh enough to take care of most of the meat they start the diet of the average Brazilian is over 50% meat the rest starch your vegetables no milk like you American can used in the biggest agricultural export product however is the coffee as you know and Brazil depends on its sale of coffee to the United States - to keep up its supply of the much-needed dollar much-needed because we don't export very much the United States the taxes in the tariffs a little high so we can only export to the states what the United States hasn't yeah the the average family in Brazil has not got a car and if they do have a cars usually for the use of the husband so to feed housewife that's to do our shopping my means of buses or streetcars now there are no big markets as you know them here in the states and there but there are fairs big fairs several parts of the city each day these fairs are there selling mostly fresh food meat so that the housewife doesn't have to worry too much vodka Blanc you can buy conveniently more than once at least once a week maybe twice maybe three times are many corner stores where they sell food doesn't spoil like we rather flour rice salt so forth the funny thing I noticed that here in the state's about the the only place where clubs very popular home we don't have many clubs you have here the all sorts of ladies clubs and OLC Lucy so far and nothing I noticed here in the states was the system of schools quite different to ours at first grade we 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th grade 5th grade did same things that children do in this country however in the sixth grade we by the learn besides studying our own language Portuguese we started to learn English and French and either Spanish or Latin we were full of languages before was very old the schools are required for all children up through through the 9th grade and after that no longer required in fact they're not very many the ghost of colleges aren't very many colleges though there are few good ones but not very many of them the people I found in this country to be very helpful and time they when I first came up to the United States and five years ago I couldn't speak any English I could understand one bit but I couldn't see hardly anything at all I found that people were quite helpful trying to well they tried to help me even though I couldn't understand him they could not understand me I remember one lady in Boston who ruff after trying to explain to me the directions to where I wanted to go he finally gave up and took me there herself didn't fetch me very much I hadn't been in this country more than three weeks Anna I kind of like to travel great deal and well I have traveled all over Brazil I'd like to see a little more of this country popular misconception I think in most of the world is that the Amazon Valley is a hot steamy place it isn't it's a very pleasant place to live their lies are probably the future of Brazil and also potential is uh quite great and plenty of room there the Amazon basin all of it including headwaters of the Amazon so forth probably the same size as the United States and population about well population Walla Brazil by one-third of the United States and the population in the Amazon Valley probably about maybe one twentieth of this country the Brazil Brazil has a fairly liberal immigration laws so that they're great many people going there but stuff man once said that if they took all the surplus population of Europe they could throw it in the middle of Brazil and never see them again never finally there's that much room there no I don't know if that's strictly true but it's an idea that very few people live the relations between Brazil and the states have the last several decades been quite good no serious troubles tall however the relations between Brazil and some of his neighbors neighbors have not been so good and but I hope this way it's gonna improve a little bit they ought oh we should live a little life in more friendly manner than we have been for example the yeah the border between Argentina and Brazil there's large waterfall so uh nothing has been done to make that into a hydroelectric power but oddly because of a rivalry no one country wants to step ahead of the other I have greatly enjoyed my physically here in the last few minutes as I have greatly enjoyed my stay among you my in the past years I hope to return again many times before after my studies in road well you've just met Jolene from Brazil we asked Joe to meet you today because well Joe's case is a little different from most of the visitors on this program under the same stars Joe has been here a few years now his earliest impressions of first coming to the United States are our dimming off he comes from Brazil but he comes of Scottish parentage we want to do to meet a young man from another part of our hemisphere who does dwell in the same world you want me why did you to meet him and to learn about his country allowed you to meet him and to know something more about him and his people people of Brazil who with us well beneath the same sky and look up at the same stars
