Description: These silent newsreels were created by Off Network Productions, a New York company created by producer and media magnate Gerald Bartell, using an archive compiled by Merton Koplin. The company distributed these films to TV stations around the United States, where they were used as fillers, and to present historical events and personalities to the public. Bartell referred to the films as a "visual encyclopedia". 1. 0:00 Film 975: French Army in WWI 2. 1:15 Film 0008: Silent film star Mary Pickford in Pollyanna 3. 2:21 Film 0023: Teddy Roosevelt on safari in Africa. This was filmed during the Smithsonian–Roosevelt African expedition to tropical Africa in 1909–1910. It was led by former US President Theodore Roosevelt. It was funded by Andrew Carnegie and sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution. 4. 3:08 Film 0027: 1914, industrialist Andrew Carnegie's houseboat is shown off Miami, Florida. A diving tower and swimming pool on the beach in Miami are shown. Carnegie rides motor launch 5. 4:20 Film 0143: Army Bombs USS Alabama 1921, the U.S. Army Air Service bombed the obsolete battleship USS Alabama (BB-8) in the Chesapeake Bay as part of a demonstration to prove aircraft could sink warships. While initiated by U.S. Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg, the "Hoover" connection is due to Herbert Hoover being the President who proclaimed the pact into effect after it was ratified by the U.S. Senate and other signatory nations in 1929. 16. 20:25 Film 0237 President Herbert Hoover's 10 Nation Tour 1929. In late 1928, President-elect Herbert Hoover embarked on a goodwill tour of ten Latin American nations to improve relations and establish a "good neighbor" policy.
