In einem Großstadtespresso sitzen junge Leute in einer Atmosphäre lässiger Langeweile und warten, bewusst oder unbewusst, auf eine imaginäre Chance. Unter ihnen ist die 17-jährige Handelsschülerin Kathrin Scherer. In einer Illustrierten liest sie von einem Nachwuchswettbewerb der Filmfirma Tempo. Zwei junge Burschen versuchen sich eine Chance bei Kathrin zu verschaffen, indem sie sich als Filmproduzenten ausgeben. Kathrin geht zunächst auf ihr Anerbieten ein, durchschaut ihre Absichten aber rechtzeitig. Sie nimmt an dem ausgeschriebenen Wettbewerb teil. Nach einer Vorstellung im Produktionsbüro wird sie zu Probeaufnahmen eingeladen. Zusammen mit ihrer Mutter geht sie durch das weite Ateliergelände zur Halle 4, wo die Aufnahmen stattfinden sollen. Die triste Stimmung der im Freigelände stehen gebliebenen Filmbauten und die nicht sehr feinfühlige Art, mit der sie im Schminkraum für die Aufnahmen hergerichtet wird, dämpfen ihre schillernden Vorstellungen von der Welt des Films. Vor der Kamera besteht sie deutlich besser als ihre Vorgängerin, obgleich sie von der Fülle technischer Vorrichtungen im Atelier verwirrt und beunruhigt ist. Es bleibt ungewiss, ob Kathrin zum Film kommt. Auf ihrem Platz im Espresso sitzt am Schluss ein anderes Mädchen, das eine gleiche Wettbewerbsankündigung liest. In a city espresso, young people sit in an atmosphere of casual boredom and wait, consciously or unconsciously, for an imaginary opportunity. Among them is 17-year-old commercial student Kathrin Scherer. In a magazine, she reads about a competition for young talent organized by the film company Tempo. Two young boys try to get a chance with Kathrin by pretending to be film producers. Kathrin initially accepts their offer, but sees through their intentions in time. She takes part in the advertised competition. After an introduction in the production office, she is invited to a test shoot. Together with her mother, she walks through the vast studio grounds to Hall 4, where the recordings are to take place. The dreary atmosphere of the film buildings left standing in the open air and the not very sensitive way in which she is made up for the shoot in the make-up room dampen her dazzling ideas of the world of film. She performs much better in front of the camera than her predecessor, although she is confused and disconcerted by the abundance of technical equipment in the studio. It remains uncertain whether Kathrin will make it into the movie. At the end, another girl sits in her place in the espresso, reading the same competition announcement.
