Am Morgen des Tages, an dem ihn die Universität Lund zum 50. Jahrestag seiner Promotion ehren will, hat der 78-jährige Medizinprofessor Isak Borg einen Alptraum, der ihn mit seinem eigenen Tod konfrontiert. Die anschließende Fahrt nach Lund unternimmt er mit seiner Schwiegertochter Marianne, die sich mit seinem Sohn Evald zerstritten hat. Unterwegs machen sie Halt bei einem Sommerhaus, wo sich Isak an seine Jugendliebe erinnert, lesen drei jugendliche Anhalter auf und besuchen Isaks Mutter. Nach einem weiteren Traum, in dem er seine verstorbene Frau beim Ehebruch beobachtet, sieht Borg als geläuterter Mensch der Zeremonie entgegen.
On the morning of the day the University of Lund wants to honor him on the 50th anniversary of his doctorate, 78-year-old medical professor Isak Borg has a nightmare that confronts him with his own death. He makes the subsequent journey to Lund with his daughter-in-law Marianne, who has fallen out with his son Evald. On the way, they stop at a summer house where Isak remembers his childhood sweetheart, pick up three teenage hitchhikers and visit Isak's mother. After another dream in which he observes his deceased wife committing adultery, Borg looks forward to the ceremony as a reformed man.
