Mit hunderttausenden Teilnehmern aus aller Welt setzte der Kongress ein Zeichen der Versöhnung, betonte die Eucharistie als Lebensquelle und gilt als wichtiger Wegbereiter für das Zweite Vatikanische Konzil. Der Schauprozess gegen den US-Piloten Francis Gary Powers fand vom 17. bis 19. August 1960 in Moskau statt und war ein zentrales Ereignis des Kalten Krieges. Powers, ein CIA-Pilot, wurde abgeschossen, als er am 1. Mai 1960 mit seinem U-2-Spionageflugzeug den sowjetischen Luftraum verletzte, um Aufklärungsfotos zu machen.
