Der Film zeigt und erläutert zunächst die Umwelt und die Geräte des Neandertalers. Mit seinem Vielzweckwerkzeug, dem Faustkeil, zerlegte er Wild, schabte Felle aus und zerschlug Knochen. Die Neandertaler jagten ihr gefährlichstes Jagdtier, den mächtigen Höhlenbären. Der Film gibt einen Einblick in die Anfänge gesellschaftlichen Handelns in der Jägergruppe. Er beschreibt das Leben einer nomadisierenden Jägerhorde der Steinzeit, vor allem anhand von Funden aus dem Neandertal und der Bärenhöhle. Mit Hilfe von Rekonstruktionen und Demonstrationen entsteht ein sehr anschauliches Bild steinzeitlicher Arbeitstechniken.

The film first shows and explains the Neanderthal's environment and tools. With his multi-purpose tool, the hand axe, he cut up game, scraped skins and smashed bones. The Neanderthals hunted their most dangerous hunting animal, the mighty cave bear. The film gives an insight into the beginnings of social activity in the hunter group. It describes the life of a nomadic hunting horde of the Stone Age, primarily on the basis of finds from the Neandertal and the bear cave. With the help of reconstructions and demonstrations, a very vivid picture of Stone Age working techniques emerges.
