Die Jugendlichen wurden direkt in ihrer Gefängniswelt gefilmt. Im Mittelpunkt steht ein einzelner Strafgefangener. Der Film verfolgt, wie er seine eintönigen Tage im 'Knast' hinter sich bringt. In schlichter Form, ohne jeden Kommentar mit lediglich ganz knappem Dialog, zeigt die Dokumentation die einzelnen Phasen eines Tagesablaufs: 06.00 Beginn des Tages mit Morgentoilette und Frühstück; 07.00 bis 12.00 Arbeit an der Maschine in der Stanzerei zur Herstellung von Deckeln für Konservendosen, eine halbe Stunde Pause auf dem Gefängnishof; 12.00 bis 13.00 Mittagszeit; 13.00 bis 16.00 Fortsetzung der Arbeit in der Stanzerei; vor dem Abendessen um 17.00 Möglichkeit eines Gesprächs mit einer Sozialarbeiterin; nach dem Abendessen Aufenthalt im Freizeitraum; 19.00 Nachtverschluss in der Zelle und 22.00 Lichter löschen. In seiner Funktion als Jugendstrafanstalt war das Landesgefängnis Schwäbisch Hall mit 500 bis 600 Inhaftierten stark überbelegt, weshalb 1974 die Jugendstrafanstalt Adelsheim ihren Betrieb aufnahm und den Standort Schwäbisch Hall entlastete. In der Folge entwickelte der Jugendstrafvollzug in Schwäbisch Hall sich wieder zu einem Modell, das viel Anerkennung erhielt. Dennoch wurde das Gefängnis in Schwäbisch Hall 1996 wieder mit Erwachsenen belegt, nachdem die Zahl der Jugendlichen im Vollzug stark zurückgegangen war. In its function as a juvenile detention center, the Schwäbisch Hall state prison was heavily overcrowded with 500 to 600 inmates, which is why the Adelsheim juvenile detention center began operations in 1974 and relieved the pressure on the Schwäbisch Hall location. Subsequently, the juvenile penal system in Schwäbisch Hall developed into a model that received much recognition. Nevertheless, the prison in Schwäbisch Hall was once again occupied by adults in 1996 after the number of juveniles in prison had fallen sharply.
