Anschauliches Gedächtnis, Materialbeherrschung, praktische Intelligenz, sprachliche Merkfähigkeit und Körperbeherrschung werden ermittelt. Anschließend erläutert und kritisiert der Film die aus diesen Ergebnissen üblichen Intelligenzwert-Berechnungen und stellt neue Möglichkeiten vor, diese Resultate zu interpretieren. Die neue Sichtweise, die sich an den feststellbaren relativen Fähigkeiten des Kindes orientiert, ist eine der Grundlagen eines großangelegten Modellversuches im Berufsbildungswerk Stetten-Remstal (ca. 1050 geistig und körperlich Behinderte). Eingehend werden die hier praktizierten Erziehungs- und Rehabilitationsmethoden behandelt, an dem Schicksal einiger Kinder die möglichen Ursachen ihrer Behinderung besprochen. Dann beschäftigt sich die Dokumentation mit dem Problem der Berufsfindung und -ausbildung von geistig Behinderten und widmet sich zum Schluss Fragen sozialer und beruflicher Integration in die Leistungsgesellschaft. The film begins by showing an examination of educational ability in a mentally retarded ten-year-old. Descriptive memory, material mastery, practical intelligence, linguistic retentiveness and physical control are determined. The film then explains and critiques the intelligence score calculations commonly used from these results and presents new ways of interpreting these results. The new view, which is based on the ascertainable relative abilities of the child, is one of the foundations of a large-scale model experiment in the Stetten-Remstal vocational training center (approx. 1050 mentally and physically handicapped people). The educational and rehabilitation methods practiced here are discussed in detail, and the fate of some children is used to illustrate the possible causes of their disabilities. The documentary then deals with the problem of finding and training a profession for the mentally handicapped, and concludes with questions of social and professional integration into the meritocracy.
