Aufgrund einer Schenkung aus dem Jahre 1700 sollte es 'auf ewige Zeiten' zu einem Asyl für hundert alte Leute werden. Der Fortbestand des Hospitals ist aber nicht mehr gesichert, denn nur noch wenige Menschen sind bereit, die Pflege der Alten und Kranken zu übernehmen. So steht das Haus in Kuks vor der Notwendigkeit, Tür und Tor zu schließen, wobei noch niemand weiß, wo seine Bewohner bleiben sollen. Der Film dokumentiert und arrangiert Realität aus der Distanz, aus beinahe historischer Perspektive. Der Film ist in ein Zitat von Thornton Wilder eingerahmt: 'Da ist ein Land der Lebenden und ein Land der Toten, und die Brücke zwischen ihnen ist die Liebe - das einzig Bleibende, der einzige Sinn.' Diese Brücke ist angesichts der Gleichgültigkeit unserer Tage gefährdet. In northeastern Bohemia, an old social institution is nearing its end: the Sporksche Hospital in Kuks. Thanks to a donation made in 1700, it was intended to serve 'in perpetuity' as a refuge for one hundred elderly people. However, the hospital's future is no longer secure, as few people are willing to take on the care of the elderly and the sick. Thus, the facility in Kuks faces the necessity of closing its doors, though no one yet knows where its residents are to go. The film documents and frames reality from a distance, from an almost historical perspective. The film is framed by a quote from Thornton Wilder: 'There is a land of the living and a land of the dead and the bridge is love, the only survival, the only meaning.'
