Im Mittelpunkt der TV-Serie steht Ernst Hoffmann - ein Besserwisser, wie er im Buch steht - mit seiner Familie. Hoffmanns Standardsatz ist: 'Wenn's nach mir ginge...' Natürlich wäre dann alles ganz anders. Wie anders, das erlebt Hoffmann immer sofort. Die Enttäuschung bleibt nicht aus. Hoffmanns 'radikale' An- und Absichten und deren Konsequenzen zeigen immer wieder, dass es einfache Lösungen nicht gibt und dass radikale Lösungen sich als ganz gewaltige Flops erweisen. Hoffmann zahlt für Krankenkasse und Sozialversicherung, und da kommt doch einer und verlangt, daß er sich auch noch um kranke Mieter kümmert. Ist nicht..., denn: 'Wenn's nach mir ginge', meint Hoffmann, 'staatlich, alles staatlich!' Aber dann... Hoffmann und seine Familie sind abhängig von Dienstleistungen, die Kosten für staatliche Sozialdienste steigen, und Hoffmann kommt ins Schleudern. Konsequenz: Nur noch Selbstinitiative, das ist die Lösung. Weg mit staatlicher Fürsorge, alles in privater Verantwortung. Und wieder einmal ist Hoffmann der Leidtragende seiner eigenen Vorstellungen. The TV series centers on Ernst Hoffmann - a textbook know-it-all - and his family. Hoffmann's standard phrase is: 'If it were up to me...' Of course, then everything would be completely different. Hoffmann always experiences how different immediately. Disappointment is inevitable. Hoffmann's 'radical' intentions and their consequences show time and again that there are no simple solutions and that radical solutions prove to be huge flops. Hoffmann pays for health insurance and social security, and then someone comes along and demands that he also take care of sick tenants. That's not right, because, as Hoffmann says, 'If it were up to me, everything would be state-run!' But then... Hoffmann and his family are dependent on services, the costs of state social services are rising, and Hoffmann is losing control. The consequence: the only solution is to take the initiative yourself. Away with state welfare, everything is now a private responsibility. And once again, Hoffmann is the victim of his own ideas.
