Die USA in den frühen 30ern in der Wirtschaftskrise: nach einer vierjährigen Haftstrafe kehrt der junge Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) zu seiner Familie im Mittleren Westen in Oklahoma auf die Farm zurück und findet die Gegend von den früheren Einwohner verlassen vor. Große Firmen haben die Pächter enteignet und Toms Familie ist im Aufbruch begriffen, um ihr neues Glück in Kalifornien zu suchen, wo Arbeiter als Obstpflücker gesucht werden. Für die große Familie wird der Trip jedoch zur Schicksalsreise: die Großeltern verwinden den Verlust der Heimat nicht und sterben unterwegs, ein junges Paar sieht in dem Familienbund keine Perspektive. In Kalifornien stranden sie nacheinander in mehreren Auffanglagern, wo sie nicht gern gesehen sind und für viel zu kleine Löhne ausgebeutet werden. Dagegen formiert sich Widerstand und es kommt immer wieder zu gewaltsamen Konflikten... The USA in the early 1930s during the Depression: after a four-year prison sentence, young Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) returns to his family farm in the Midwest in Oklahoma and finds the area abandoned by its former inhabitants. Large companies have dispossessed the tenants and Tom's family is about to leave to seek their new fortune in California, where workers are needed as fruit pickers. For the large family, however, the trip turns into a journey of fate: the grandparents cannot get over the loss of their homeland and die on the way, while a young couple see no prospects in the family union. In California, they are stranded one after the other in several reception camps, where they are not welcome and are exploited for wages that are far too low.
