Am Nipigonsee schnitzt der Junge Kyle im Winter eine Indianerfigur, die in einem Kanu sitzt. Er bemalt die Figur, beschwert die Kanu-Unterseite mit Blei und schnitzt in den Bootsrumpf 'Paddle to the Sea' als Name des Werks sowie 'Please put me back in the water' ('Bitte setzt mich ins Wasser zurück'). Er hofft, dass 'Paddle to the Sea' durch das Gefälle des Wassers langfristig bis zum Atlantik schwimmen kann - eine Reise, die er selbst nie antreten könnte. Kyle setzt 'Paddle to the Sea' im Frühjahr mit der Schneeschmelze aus und die Figur schafft es bis zum Sommer zum Lake Superior, wo der Indianer Wildtiere und Waldbrände erlebt und verbleibt, bis der Winter kommt. Im nächsten Frühjahr wird er aus Versehen von einem Jungen geangelt, jedoch zurück ins Wasser gesetzt. Er schafft es bis Detroit, erlebt das Feuerwerk des Unabhängigkeitstages und den Dreck der Abwässer. Er übersteht die Niagarafälle und den Herbst in einem Reservat. Über eine Schleuse gelangt er schließlich ins Meer, wo er Monate später von Fischern in einem Netz gefangen, jedoch wieder dem Meer übergeben wird. So landet er am Ende bei einem Leuchtturmwärter, der ihn neu bemalt und anschließend erneut ins Meer wirft. At Lake Nipigon in winter, Kyle, a boy, carves an Indian figure sitting in a canoe. He paints the figure, weights down the underside of the canoe with lead, and carves 'Paddle to the Sea' into the hull of the boat as the name of the work, as well as 'Please put me back in the water'. He hopes that the slope of the water will allow 'Paddle to the Sea' to float to the Atlantic Ocean in the long run - a journey he could never make himself. Kyle suspends 'Paddle to the Sea' in the spring as the snow melts, and the character makes it to Lake Superior by summer, where the Indian experiences wildlife and wildfires and remains until winter arrives. The next spring he is accidentally hooked by a boy, but is put back in the water. He makes it to Detroit, experiences the Independence Day fireworks and the filth of sewage. He survives Niagara Falls and the fall on a reservation. Via a lock he finally makes it to the sea, where he is caught in a net by fishermen months later, but is returned to the sea. So he ends up with a lighthouse keeper, who repaints him and then throws him back into the sea.
