Description: 16mm Film - Der Filmschnitt - BRD 1958 Regie: Ernst Niederreither Buch: Ernst Niederreither und Gunter Groll Kamera: Ernst Niederreither, Josef Kirzeder, Joachim Faber Musik: N. N. Darsteller: Ursula Herking, Ernst Fritz Fürbringer, John Pauls-Harding, Elmar Wepper, Angelika Bender, Sibylle von Gymnich u. a. Within a narrative framework - a film editor and director at the editing table working on a film - simple examples are used to illustrate the meaning of the term 'cut' and the application and effect of this technique, while also explaining the principle of 'compulsory association.' An example from an ancient pictographic script familiarizes us with the most important function of the cut: The symbol for 'knife' is inserted into the symbol for 'heart'; the new symbol means 'pain'! The combination of two ideas leads to the association of a third. The task of film editing is to stimulate trains of thought through the 'correct' sequence of image units, the so-called 'shots'. Parents say goodbye to their children. The boy finds a matchbox. His face reflects flickering flames and contorts in fear. We see a fire truck driving by. Although not a single flame has been shown, there is only one thought here: fire! The camera first shows us a cyclist, then the fire truck. The fire truck thus seems to be following the cyclist, even though we did not see both in the frame at the same time. If we see the fire truck first and then the cyclist, the impression arises that the cyclist is following the truck out of curiosity. The sequence of images - that is, the editing sequence - shapes our thought processes. Building on the same example, the film then goes on to explore the fundamental principles of film editing as they relate to the creation of concepts of space and time. In a conversation between the director and the editor, the principles are clarified regarding how film editing must be applied to enable us to experience a narrative.
