Jim Stark (James Dean) is the new kid in town, a rebel with a troubled past who finds no understanding from his parents and rubs everyone the wrong way. Nevertheless, he finds friends in Judy (Nathalie Wood) and the shy Plato (Sal Mineo). But the local gang constantly challenges the newcomer. When a dare involving cars leads to the death of the gang leader, the situation spirals out of control.
