A Jewish boy in Berlin today: David's everyday life differs little from that of his classmates. When his friends Max and Felix discover his religious affiliation, he takes them to the Pestalozzistraße synagogue and explains its features and religious services together with Rabbi Ernst M. Stein. Documentary excerpts from a Bar Mitzvah celebration are intercut into the fictional frame narrative, during which the great cantor Estrongo Nachama sings the "Shma Israel." As guests in Jewish religious education, the boys finally learn some rules of Jewish dietary law and their significance in everyday life.
