The starting point and basis for Carl Orff's music is the spontaneous drive to move and the elemental power of rhythm. The film can only provide a small cross-section of the extensive body of work. It does so by showing through eight instructive examples how Carl Orff's teaching method, as if in play, awakens elemental forces. The companion booklet to the film gives the following headings for the eight examples:
Elementary instruction in the pentatonic scale
Improvisation exercise
Round dance — sung, played and danced
Dance with instruments
Witch's multiplication table — rhythm from language
Berceuse — movement improvisation
Dance piece for flutes and percussion
Finale — words from Goethe's Faust
From simple rhythmic-melodic exercises for the youngest children through to improvisational play on typical Orff instruments, this film documents the Orff method in practice.
