In order to raise parents' and educators' understanding of the phenomenon of comics the first part of the film reports on the long tradition of comics: it refers to picture stories of past centuries and then deals with the actual origin of today's comics literature at the beginning of this century in the USA and the classic comics of the 1930s (Phantom, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and others). Then, by means of a comparison with the film, somestylistic devices of comics (image, text, typification) are discussed. 2. 'Considerations for and against comics'. After a series of opposing opinions from parents and educators on the problem of comics: 'There is no point in simply banning them, rather one should try to deal with them and use the possibilities that comics offer.' The following are some examples of pedagogical approaches to comics literature, including 'Charlie Brown and the Peanuts' (here the commentary draws attention to the high reality content of the illustrated stories). 3. 'The Book Shelf'. In the last section, various comics and picture stories are presented and analyzed (by Janosch, Schulz, McCay, among others). In this context, tips for learning to read comics and ways of playing with picture stories are given.
