A colony of swallows with around five thousand animals nests in the school building of the historic temple city of Nikko in Japan. The children and teachers take a keen interest in their lives. They observe and care for them and thus gather biological knowledge. But the large number of swallows raises hygienic problems due to the considerable building pollution, which the city administration wants to solve by removing the nests. Finally, an ornithologist, whom the teachers call in for an assessment, proposes a compromise with the city administration that meets the wishes of everyone involved: the children can keep the swallows if they take care of cleaning the building themselves. Am Schulhaus der historischen Tempelstadt Nikko in Japan nistet eine Schwalbenkolonie mit etwa fünftausend Tieren, an deren Leben die Kinder und Lehrer lebhaften Anteil nehmen. Sie beobachten und pflegen sie und sammeln so biologische Kenntnisse. Aber die große Zahl der Schwalben wirft durch die erhebliche Gebäudeverschmutzung hygienische Probleme auf, die die Stadtverwaltung durch Beseitigung der Nester lösen will. Endlich schlägt ein Ornithologe, den die Lehrer zur Begutachtung herbeirufen, einen Kompromiss mit der Stadtverwaltung vor, der den Wünschen aller Beteiligten gerecht wird: Die Kinder dürfen die Schwalben behalten, wenn sie sich selbst um die Reinhaltung des Gebäudes kümmern.
