Two groups of 8-year-old girls and boys first demonstrate exercises in spatial orientation, hopping, running in curves, and group movement. This is followed by movement tasks that equally stimulate the imagination and promote dexterity, strength, and reaction time. Two groups of 12-year-old girls and boys at different developmental stages ('third play age') are presented with movement tasks involving dramatic play for the first time. The boys are given action tasks in the space, while the girls are given group running with leadership changes as an adaptation task. To develop a sense of posture and varying degrees of body tension, the groups are given tasks to simplify functional movements to their essentials. The film was shot at the German Sport University Cologne. Good contacts exist with the three participating schools through their physical education teachers, who are graduates of the German Sport University. The 8-year-old girls and boys attend the Cologne-Junkersdorf Elementary School, the 12-year-old boys attend the Kreuzgasse High School, and the 12-year-old girls attend the Kaiserin-Theophanu School. All school administrations showed understanding and cooperation toward the project—each group had to come to the German Sport University for three mornings or afternoons of filming; some parents objected to the long commutes, canceled classes, and potential impact on academic performance, which is why the group sizes varied. The film was shot in October 1969, following the fall break; in August and September, the relevant groups were brought together a total of four times during physical education classes in each grade to perform coordination, reaction, and rhythmic exercises. The film conveys unvarnished images of the working situations: movement and reaction errors were neither avoided through repeated practice nor were they edited out later; the enjoyment of the activity, the intensity, and the freedom of movement demonstrate the naturalness of the classroom environment.
